Provenance
Palm oil is primarily produced in Indonesia and Malaysia, which together account for around 85% of global supply. The plantations in these tropical countries are vast, covering millions of hectares, particularly in Sumatra and Borneo. We can also find plantations in subtropical belt of Africa.
Impact
The expansion of palm oil plantations has been a double-edged sword. While it has driven economic growth in Indonesia and Malaysia, it has also led to significant deforestation and environmental concerns, particularly with the destruction of rainforests in Africa and the loss of biodiversity.
